smile at a stranger

So I was walking down the street the other day and smiled at a man walking towards me. I am pretty sure he was caught off guard as he smiled back at me in a sarcastic way.

I kept smiling and asked how he was as we approached closer. He stopped, turned behind him and looked back at me. He pointed to himself with a questioned look on his face.

I smiled back and said, “Yes, how are you?”

He said, “Oh, um, good.”

I said, “Great! Have a nice day.”

Our arms barely touched as we crossed by one another.

He no longer smiled, yet I still beamed.

I could hear a “Humph?” coming from his direction as our steps grew distant. But that was not the last thing I heard him say….

“How are you today?” he said…to the next stranger….
